The McSupersized Portfolio
What would Ronald McDonald look like if he actually ate at McDonald’s? This is one of the questions I asked myself as I began trying to create a more realistic portrait of the great American icon and the franchise that he promotes. What was he like as a young clown? Who would he invite to his last supper? Is Ronald McDonald really all things good? Or are there dark forces at work that have shaped his character, from the premature baldness of his youth to his final incarnation as the figurehead of a franchise more ubiquitous than even the first great franchise, the Catholic Church? With this series of work I attempt to contextualize Ronald as one of our culture’s greatest icons, possessing the Buddha’s girth and wisdom, Jesus’ love of children and mysterious ability to feed the masses on a single loaf, and the omnipresent prophet-ability of our All-American deity, Mickey Mouse.
